The Importance of Digital Saftey for Teachers and Students

In my E271 class, all students were required to do a presentation on the topic, digital safety. The topics for digital safety were Fair use and Copy right, digital saftey, cyberbulling, textual harassment, sexting, pharming, and phishing. After listening to each presentation, I believe that  all topics  are important  for teachers and students to learn about. Allowing teachers and students to understand the rules of Copyright and Fair use would benefit them in order to avoid any copyright violation. According to Digital Citizenship's article "Copyright for Teachers", teachers are not allowed to make photocopies of entire chapters or textbooks for students since it violates the copyright rules (Copyright for Teachers, n.d.).  Teaching safety and privacy, especially to students allows students to not share important information to the internet or strangers online. Making students learn of cyberbullying, textual harassment,  and sexting can help them learn how to avoid these situations or what to do if they ever encounter the situation. Lastly, educating teachers and students on pharming and phishing allows them to know how to spot fake websites or emails that wish to to get valuable information from you.

A way to let my students learn digital safety might be the same way my ED271 teacher made us learn of the rules. Maybe by allowing them to research the rules and presenting it to the class can help makes the students learn and be aware of the dangers online. If I notice the presentation the student presented on was vague, or I can sense they did not understand the topic given, I would then elaborate and give real life examples for students so it can be easier for them to grasp. In addition, I would also try to find videos that would help explain some of the digital safety topics. For example, pharming and phishing might be a hard concept for students to grasp. A video that I might show to my students would be a video by e-Crimes wales called, "Business Crimes- Phishing & Pharming". Within the video, it helps explains what phishing and pharming is including how to spot if a website or email is fake (e-Crimes Wales, 2015).
After they presented on digital safety, I would give different scenarios and ask them which topic belongs to each scenario and what the person in the scenario should have done to avoid the situation. By making the students participate in this activity will give me a clear understanding if the students were able to grasp digital safety.

My group and I used google hangouts, whatsapp, google docs, prezi, socrative, and skype for business in order to communicate with each other regarding our presentation. These tools were proven to be very helpful, especially since one of our group mates recently became a father. He had to stay out of class for a week, the tools listed earlier helped us communicate with him when he was not able to be in class.  Prezi was the platform my group and I used to present on our topic, Copyright and Fair Use. Along with prezi, we used socrative for our audience interaction. Socrative is an app that allows the teacher to engage with their class with quizzes that the teacher creates. Google docs allowed us to share information with one another easy that dealt with our presentation. In class, cellphone use is not allowed to be used, however, by using google hangouts, we were able to communicate while in class to our group mate who was at home with his new born baby.

Overall, as technology becomes more prominent in education, teachers and students must learn how to be safe when going online. This assignment helped my classmates and I become informed of what to be aware of and how to avoid the dangers of the internet. This assignment also gave us a better understanding on how vulnerable children are to internet if they are not monitored on what they are doing online. As teachers, it is our job to let children learn in a safe environment which includes the internet. By informing teachers the safety of the internet, learning will become efficient for both the teacher and the student.

Your text should be formatted consistently, i.e., use the same font for the entire academic essay.
